Nottingham Hospitals Radio exists purely to entertain the patients, staff, friends and relatives of Nottinghams City and QMC Hospitals. It’s a very local and personal thing that we think makes a real difference. Hospital radio is a very British tradition, but now there is interest in what we do from around the world. Local Radio, International interest!

Awareness of the NHS

The Coronavirus pandemic is making everyone aware of our hospitals in ways like never before. The levels of appreciation for the amazing staff is at an all time high.

Hidden away in a west block corridor in the Queens Medical Centre, are the radio studios of NHR. These studio’s, the volunteers that operate them and the service they provide are now getting attention themselves. International attention.

NHR have recently been approached by the New York Times who have completed an article about Hospital radio – featuring NHR. The article appeared in print on the 14th May 2020 on page 4 of the main newspaper and online.

Take A Bow, Michael Doyle

The NHR sports team regularly visit the grounds of Notts County and Nottingham Forest to provide commentary and comment on the games. One of the commentaries that Richard Smith is most proud to present was entitled ‘Take a bow, Michael Doyle’.

The clip is of Michael Doyles’ first goal for Notts County, scored from the halfway line in a way not seen before. It secured Notts a 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge on the 11th January 2020. Richard is clearly excited!

VE Day 75

VE Day – 75 Years

In order to mark the 75th Anniversary of VE day, Nottingham Hospitals’ radio are pleased to be able to bring you 4 hours of VE day programming courtesy of Absolute Radio 40’s and the Hospital Broadcasting Association.

Included are interviews, news clips, stories and music from the era.

In the middle of the current crisis it is going to be a very different event from years gone by, however it is still so very important that we take the time to remember and celebrate.

It will start at 11:00 AM with 2 minutes silence.

Mark is a life long Notts County fan, who now spends his spare time covering the magpies for NHR.  Occasional visits to the red side of the Trent mean he is our resident roving reported for all things Nottingham football.  A role he has been sentenced to for the last 6 years.  Outside of commentating, Mark can also be heard on match days giving his thoughts on the football kits of today.  Gog Wan meets Barry Davies

Richard Smith is in his second spell as lead commentator for NHR at Notts County. Richard spent 4 years working in the old Main Stand at Meadow Lane during the Neil Warnock era in the late 80s, early 90s and in that time had the pleasure of bringing some of the atmosphere and joy of some historic Notts County victories at the old Wembley stadium to our listeners.
Even though he now lives in Lancashire, his commitment to covering The Magpies on a regular basis knows no bounds with frequent visits to both home and away matches.
Richard also occasionally commentates on The Reds as well as the occasional cricket match at Trent Bridge but more frequently at Emirates Old Trafford on Lancashire for our colleagues at Preston Hospital Radio.

National Hospital Radio Awards 2020

We’re really pleased to announce that NHR has won two awards.

Gold Femail Presenter

Julie Caston won Gold for Female Presenter of the year and Rajiv Hasan won Silver for Male Presenter of the year. 

Our Sports Team also made it into the top ten in the Special Event category which is a tremendous achievement.

We are part of the Hospital Broadcasting Association who are there to help us be the best hospital radio we can be by offering help, support and advice.

Each year they hold their annual awards where radio stations across the country gather to attend seminars, catch up and attend the awards dinner.

Understandably this year the awards were cancelled due to Coronavirus and so the awards took place online a little later than planned!

NHR Coronavirus update

The world is being impacted by the Coronavirus in ways that just a few short weeks ago, none of us would have thought possible. This is affecting all corners of the earth and there can be no-one that is not affected in some way. NHR are no exception. We therefore need to bring you an NHR Coronavirus update.

As the spread of the disease continues, more and more people are having to self isolate, stay at home to look after friends or family or have their work patterns altered. Unfortunately, many of our presenters are experiencing challenges which we can all understand, appreciate and support.

In order to adapt to an ever changing situation, we have had to implement an emergency show schedule.

For the next few weeks, we will only be able to host a request show ‘Your Choice’ on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays between 17:00 and 19:00.

We have tried to keep the schedule predictable so that should you want to request a song for a friend or relative inside or outside of the hospital, you know when we will be on air and able to play them for you.

During the remaining time, our wonderful systems will try and keep you entertained with music and news 24 hours a day.

Remember, for those in hospital and City or QMC, the radio channels on the Hospedia system are free 24 hours a day.

NHR Goes Online

We are pleased to announce that as of today, you can listen to NHR online.

Nottingham Hospitals Radio is a charity dedicated to entertaining patients (and staff) of the Queen’s Medical Centre and City Hospital, and we’ve been doing that for over 45 years.

We’d been planning to go online for a few years now, once we had the funds raised for new equipment.  We were almost at that point when Coronavirus hit.  So instead of waiting for a big launch, we decided to get online as soon as we could to help keep people company and connect patients to their friends and family at this really difficult time.

Until now, the only way that you could listen to us has been via the Hospedia bedside systems.  When we were able to visit the wards one of the most frequently asked questions we got was -can relatives listen to us from home, to hear the dedication for their loved one.  We’ve now got this solved! You can now listen to NHR online via our Website and Mytuner-radio.com (Apps available for Android, IOS, Mac and Windows).
